Characteristically easier and more approachable than the Caprices, the Sonatas focus on melody, which Paganini then builds upon. Complementing are the accompaniment chord progressions and structures, which remain standard in nature and largely undeveloped harmonically, providing a solid foundation and freedom for Paganini's exploratory improvisation. The fifty-five minute DVD counterpart showcases thirty-three examples and three combinations - touching each Sonata and movement - contains brief, musical analyses, and includes a demonstration of Sonata 3's first movement.
